New observations of H2 velocity profiles in the Orion bullet wakes are extremely difficult to reconcile with existing steady-state shock models.

These line ratios (CDR) have been divided by those expected from a 2000 K slab of gas to emphasize the deviation of the data from the purely thermalised case (dashed curve). In addition, the data shows clearly the scatter amongst the column densities observed for each vibrational level, a feature that is precluded in any C-type shock model. We have shown (Fernandes and Brand 1995) that this scatter can be well modelled by allowing a Lya pump to populate the higher energy levels of the ground electronic state of H 2 • These excited states will then decay to lower levels leading to the mixing with the shocked population.
